pppsetup - change ttyS0 or ttyS1 to ttyLT0
copy the two modules to /lib/modules/2.2.26/misc/
insmod slhc
insmod ppp   (for 2.4.31 kernels ppp_generic and ppp_async)
insmod lt_modem
insmod lt_serial
ppp-on

(See the dial4 script in my package - eznet up 4 can be replaced with 
ppp-on if you have only one modem.  chmod +x).

Lucent/agere modems are PCI or found in Compaq Presario and Armada 
laptops.  Only winmodems I have gotten working with linux.
